The Motions of Elders

The Motions of Elders:

For Lundquist and Rowan

The news is always fresh in Toronto;
a palpable layer of smoke overhead

and you stay, like it or not, because
leaving here is going nowhere.

So you flutter like a red cape
on the horns of a bull down dying.

Against the back-drop of metropolis,
need is a woman with her hood up

and her passenger is a man with a gun:
innocense divested of love in shadow;

never to be lit again, never to care
even as the storm-trucks come:

Sidewalks gleam through sheet and scatter
of rain, hail and clattering cans

and the dead-trees dance free of their wires
as the power Comes DOWN and GOES Down

leaving only stillness and darkness; at last
this coldness has the warm feel of home.

The motions of elders are as the cupping of light
and of voice projected over great distance;

trained hands to grasp the struggling word
and birth it bright from a receeding mouth.

Other than that, you can suck my absinthe

Feel free to grab some porn to bolster your
poetry… Can’t remember, do you write it?

What Is Happening/Going To Happen in Palestine?

What Is Happening/Going To Happen in Palestine?

There is a political dance happening in Palestine.
However, it is NOT a dainty European waltz. It is a
brutal dance of knives to the death: The Palestinian
vote for Hamas is one of both desperation and the
outright insanity desperation can bring about. And
everybody knows this:

Hamas knows it and it is fumbling to avoid actually
taking the reins of power–But it can’t avoid doing
this, try as they might to put up a show with some
dupe or puppet appearing to take the reins of power.

But Fatah, every last/least member of which also
knows that if Hamas takes the reins of power the
whole enterprise must crumble with a fatal thud,
Fatah will do everything it can to make sure Hamas is
very much seen to take responsibility for governing
(including even assassinating anyone who agrees to
play Hamas’s puppet) because it WANTS Hamas to fail:

In this deadly dance, which is in fact between Fatah
and the Palestinian People, Hamas is almost an
irrelevance: What we are seeing is the Palestinian
People turning its back on Fatah, and now Fatah is
about to turn its back on the Palestinian People to
show them that Fatah is the only real alternative:

Fatah will sit down, light up a cigarette, and wait
for the Hamas government to fail. And when it does,
then it will wait for the Palestinian People to come
begging Fatah to rule over them once again. Then
Fatah’s power will be almost absolute: The Palestinian
People will know this, American & Israel will know
this, and the Arabs & the whole world will know this.

That is the plan: Then there will be no more talk of
democracy in Palestine and everyone will accept
Fatah’s unchallenged/unchalengable right to rule.

Everyone in the world knows that is the plan: What
will happen in Palestine, what MUST happen in
Palestine. And the only question is whether the rank &
file of Fatah will have the patience to see the plan
through… or whether they will precipitate a coup.

The West can still save Hamas, of course (just as it
saved the Iranian revolution & mullahs). But Fatah
(and, to a lesser extent, Israel) will be doing all it
can, by hook or crook, to try to prevent it… because
the worse thing that could happen from Fatah’s point
of view would be for Hamas to do as the world is
asking and actually recognize Israel’s right to exist,
renounce terrorism, and disarm its militants: That
would doom Fatah to oblivion just as certainly as it
(the divorce between Islamic movements and their dream
to battle non-Muslims) would doom all "secular"
dictatorships that now rule in the Islamic world.

Personally, I think Fatah knows what it’s doing. And
Fatah’s chances look pretty good right where it is.

gild the lily

I’m reading a collection of essays by Gore Vidal, and he refences this
expression "gild the lily."  I’m not familiar with it.  There are a lot
of word people here, poets and so on.  What does this expressio mean?
